So, for those of you who didn't come, you should know that you missed out. BABE was awesome! As you can see in Tris's post below, the table looked lovely. I didn't get too long to wander around but I did manage to speak to some of the people I'd already mention. Whilst I didn't do a proper interview, I did have a few conversations that answered some of my questions. Here are some points that I've written down...

-Usually book fairs won't support you financially, even if you do them every weekend. It's not a regular source of income so you might make loads one fair and none the other. Not reliable.

-People like free stuff but make sure you don't give stuff out all over the place, like to just regular people looking around etc, as they won't appreciate it and you won't have got your work anywhere else- it'll just be thrown away. (Someone who did lots of owls said this...)

-Don't expect to get into an illustration based job right away after university. Absolutely take it if you get offered one but don't be worried if you have to have a part time normal shop job or something at first. (This is a very condensed version of the conversation I had with Alex Pritchard, who makes lovely books.)

-You definitely need to have an overall definite style and look to your stall, so that people want to buy into this identity. (Again, owl people).

This last point made me wonder whether we should arrange our stall all mixed up like we do (to show the variety) or maybe have it a bit more compartmentalised- ie one section of the table is screen print, another is digital, the badges are over here, the books are over there... etc. We should talk about this before we do the next fair. What do you all think?

AND a lady named Tanya from Book Arts Bookshop (Old Street, London) has asked us if we want to do an exhibition in her window space, which we all need to discuss together but would be rather lovely!

Hi everyone!

Katie and me are both going to BABE to sell ABC@BIAD work, but we can't do it on our own! We need your help, give us your printy stuff!! Obviously it needs to be good quality and well packaged and presented. If you'd like us to sell your bits and bobs then please bring your work into school. You can leave it in the plan chest draw marked "BABE" or in the one marked "Chloe Cook" if there's room, or just give it to someone who is involved. Chiu will be looking at all the work before we go so if your work is a bit below the standard of everything else we're taking then I'm afraid it may not go with us. Come and see someone in the print room if you need help or advice, we're all friendly like kittens! =^.^=

Also, Katie and I don't wanna be alone so if you'd like to man the stall with us it'd be a great experience for you and would stop us going insane! Leeds Artist Book Fair

ABC@BIAD went up to Leeds to sell our wares at what was a really good Artist Book Fair. We all really enjoyed the weekend and got to meet some very talented and friendly people. We also got some great positive feedback on our work which was really important to us all. A book fair is a really good way to test your work on your market audience- you can see if the people you think will like your work actually do like it, and you can also find out what needs improving and what is already good. There was so much lovely work there that I probably bought nearly as much as I sold, but who needs a student loan!!

The book fair was two rooms within Parkinson Court at the University of Leeds, which is a beautiful building. It was really roomy but still really packed. Leeds clearly is a good place for a handmade and artist book scene.

Despite our best efforts at getting people to give us their work or bring it to the fair themselves our table ended up quite roomy. So next time PLEASE bring your work guys, we need more to sell!!

We are very proud to have been approached by Manchester Metropolitan University to run this years Artists' Book Fair. Now in it's fifth year the book fair has become well renowned for presenting the best in contemporary books.

On show will be 40 stands of hand-made journals, hand-printed and bound editions, altered books and lots more, from artists and small publishers from the North West region and around the UK.

There will also be events, exhibitions and short courses in bookmaking and letterpress run to coincide with the fair.

Entrance will be free, and all artists and makers are there to discuss their work. There are lots of bargains to be had too, and the work is truly beautiful, the wealth of craftsmanship and creativity on show outstanding.

Getting your work at B'ham Zine Fest

Hi everyone,

I'm sure you all know from previous posts that we have a table at the first ever Birmingham Zine Festival collectively, and that I said I'd sit at it. If you want your work at the table then cool! Just contact me at start_today@rocketmail.com about getting your work to me. However, it seems that I won't really be sitting at the table. Here is a bit of the email I got from the organisers:

***IN PERSON***

- We'll be accepting up to 10 zines, comics or booklets from each person.
- We'll be setting up from 11am (fair opens at 12noon). You can bring your zines along at any point during the day, but the earlier you can bring them, the more you'll be likely to sell!
- We'll record how many zines you give us and you'll receive ALL the money from any sales your publications make!
- You'll need to collect your money and any unsold publications from the communal table your publication is on. Again, this can be done at any point throughout the day, but the later the better (the fair finishes at 6pm).

So just to clarify I asked how the day will go, and got this email back:

Hi Chloe,

That's okay! The festival organisers will be selling zines on the communal tables. The idea is for people to give their zines to us, we'll sell them and when you need to leave the fair, you can collect your money and any unsold copies. We won't take any sort of cut from the money your zines make.

So you won't need to sit at the table and sell your zines! You'll be able to enjoy the fair, exhibitions and workshops!

So we won't be sitting at the tables but I assume we get to set them up. Bad because we won't be able to answer questions anyone may have about our work, or be able to change prices according to sales, but good because we will find it easy to go around the whole festival and look at everything at our own pace rather than worrying about getting back to the table.

Birmingham Zine Fest

Is anyone doing the birmingham zine fest? There's a link to the facebook group in the title. I asked about tables with ABC in mind and this is the email I got back:
How many of you would there be? We have communal tables for people who have 2-4 zines each- would this be suitable? Unfortunately table space to have your own table is limited and we are just sorting through table booking emails to see what room we have!

So let me know if you're already sorting out a table for ABC, and if not then please let me know if you'd like to join in selling your stuff. I'm happy to take other people's stuff too that can't make it to the actual event. Just please let me know asap so I can let the people know if we want a table or not :)

I'd really like to take a few artist books etc to Made, at Tunbridge Wells on Saturday 21st August. Is anyone else interested? They're doing half tables for free right now, but if a few people wanted to go then we could ask for a full table (although obviously this would probably cost us money but I'm happy to pay to sell my work). The train from Birmingham might be quite expensive but it'll be in the summer holidays so we might want to all go separately from wherever we live at home anyway. There's quite a few fairs etc coming up/booking now, so if you spot any then please let everyone know :)

Me and Sarah travelled to Leeds on the 12th- 13th March for our favorite book fair! The spectacular Parkinson Court held the fair within Leeds University. The fair was extremely busy over the two days and we had a great time making quite alot of money! ha ha.

anyways, this is my design silk screen print. the plan is to experiment further with it once its printed. work over the top with acrylic and ink, and digitally. all color saved on serperate layers so thats the seperation done i think :) any crit on how to make it better or any suggestions for if it dosnt work as a silk screen.

What I'd like the students to do, for the workshop, is to:

Bearing in mind that the outcome will be a b/w zine, document the week ahead [18th - 25th November] in a way that suits them. E.G. photography, collecting, drawing, recording etc. The collections / photos etc will then be collated into a zine called 'seven days'. Each student will make a zine of the same title, but the content and format is entirely their choice.

Although zines will be photocopied b/w, they might have screen printed / photographic images within, or collage, or original drawings etc. Indesign could be used to lay the zine out. The student can decide on the print run, I suppose depending on what is available. A minimum is a run of 10.

The zine doesn't have to be a 'diary' as such. It could be a collection of sweet wrappers found through the week, each carefully documented and presented as a series of b/w photographs, for example. It could be a drawing made at exactly 10am each day for exactly five minutes, or it could be a Richard Long type documented journey, or a
record of gps positions...

I'll bring some artists' books and zines with me to show various formats. I think if the students who want to do this get their stuff together by the 25th, then we can talk about it and they can look through what I bring in, then decide how they want to produce their zine. So I suppose rather than a 'class' type workshop it'll be a discussion,over a table, of ideas and examples which they can take forward in their own time. The main thing is that they collect the weeks bits for their publication and have it with them on Wednesday."

I tried redrawing the character from my artist book 'what not to put on your face' a few times to try and find a way that was more my style but because I rarely draw people I couldn't draw anything I was happy with so I turned to my sketchbook for other ideas. I just as rarely draw cats but after drawing the Icarus comic for Ink Soup I felt that I could at least draw a passable one.

In my opinion this came out alot better than the first try with a human character. I had to rework a few of the ideas but most stayed intact.
I might try making posters of each panel with 'What not to put on your cat' as the title along with a number and then the act i.e #7 Radiation.

But anyway I have another 6 to draw for the morning so back to work.

Ripleys Believe It Or Not Annuals(there's a new one every year!)- these are wicked for odd stories which I think help with my work because they give me a basis for my odd stories. Also just a good read!

Wildlife of the British Isles by Alice Tomsett- I just like animals.

Hi all I've been looking at the theme of journey and how i collect random memorabilia on trips. i have been experimenting with a collage, ink and photoshop and wanted to see how my image might look screen printed. i love the form of old and new buildings merging to form one.

This is an illustration by Kerrie Jane Stritton who's style is similar to mine. i particularly like the colours used as they create an urban feel to the work. She also looks at the everyday and see's beauty in the urban jungle, very much like myself.

"I spend most of my life in a perpetual dream world, my mind drifting through landscapes where narratives start to form. Some spill out as a single image where, within an empty landscape, i imagine what strange incident has taken place. Others are ongoing, larger and can only be expressed within a series of images. i am always inspired by places i visit, but Britain has often been my main inspiration, There are so many different exciting environments but sadly people feel they have to go backpacking up a mountain to experience a "real view", disregarding the everyday. Me? i can almost have an orgasm over an industrial wasteland."

After searching through artist books websites and getting disheartened by page upon page of people trying to one up each other with their crazy designs I picked up a copy of Hand to Eye and found Tom Gauld. I read one of his mini books when Chiu brought us some examples in but I didn't think much about him until I went on his website and found his short comics which I felt my work related to not so much in style but the short narratives and pictorial one liners.

I found this small comic of Gauld's after I wrote the one I'm about to show but if I had found it sooner I think I could have took some tips from it to help me write 'Things not to put on your face'. For such a broad title it took me ages to think of things that would actually be funny to illustrate and some of them are still a bit hit and miss. I indent to go back and redraw each panel adding shading and maybe colour. ( I have the hand writing of a cracked up spider so i might change the text )

(these are just some examples of panels for 'Things not to put on your face' not sure how I want to set it out yet.)

I like the openness of the 'things not to put on your face' idea but I've also been sketching out ideas for a few short stories. I've be looking at Greek mythology and thinking of other myths I could make a collection of. So far I've been playing with the story of Icarus.

"Icarus' father, Daedalus, a talented and remarkable Athenian craftsman, attempted to escape from his exile in the place of Crete, where he and his son were imprisoned at the hands of King Minos. Daedalus fashioned two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son. Before they took off from the island, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea. Overcome by the giddiness that flying lent him, Icarus soared through the sky curiously, but in the process he came too close to the sun, which melted the wax. Icarus kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms. And so, Icarus fell into the sea."(Taken from Wikipedia and edited slightly)

I took this story and twisted it turning Icarus and his father Daedalus into birds cornered in a room and held captive by a cat. Every time they try to fly away the cat wakes and pins them back down. They sit and wait for their death until a baby comes along and wakes the cat. Noticing the cat doesn't attack the baby Daedalus comes up with the idea to make wax bodies for them both to make themselves look human and escape. Using a nearby candle they pack wax around their wings and legs molding them into a human shape. They walk past the cat who wakes then ignores them until Icarus gets too excited by the thought of freedom and walks too close to the fire where the wax melts and the cat pounces.

This first sketch was the rough ideas for the wax bodies and the baby.
I used pencil and fine liner for the sketches and then calligraphy pens and acrylic in for the rough panel. I think the pen and inks give the feathers on the birds a much better look than just a fine liner.

And a rough sketch of how the first panel will be composted with the two cornered birds and the shadow of the cat.

hiii.. ..i did some sketches scanned them in and used photoshop, experimented around with the colours, to see how these would look if they were screen printed.iv chosen to illustrate a book about shoes&the different styles.

These are Tymn Armstrong's illustration which i feel my work relates to.probably because of the bold colour and the composition of his work.These illustrated for Threadless.

i also loved Hilary Judd's artist book from the Tate Britain Artists book collection.

Sideshow Curiosities

Hello everyone! This is my 1st artist's book on the theme 'collections', 'The Lottie Street Sideshow Curiosities':

You can see all the pages from those images, it's just a single sheet of paper folded, printed front and back so the bearded lady is kind of a poster inside. I'm re-doing the text on the banners as I think it's messy, and I've experimented with screen printing a section of it which I think looks good so I'm looking at simplifying the designs to print them (this is watercolour and so far I've had to print with 3 colours).

Also been looking for artists books in a similar vein to mine which I am inspired by, and I can't stop looking at William Blake's books:

He's one of my favourite artists. I love his work so much because of the beautiful fluid colours and the way that his text is as much a part of the book as the drawing, rather than one being used in support of the other. I've tried to do this too in my book by making all the words part of the images, for example in the banners. Although my style is more contemporary with bolder colours and not so realistic drawings, I draw a lot of inspiration from William Blake.

This is the book I made for the 'One Week Brief'; it is made out of one sheet of paper, and is created using collage and drawing with different materials including indian ink, biro, and watercolours. For the collection, I chose to base my book upon the outfits/clothes I had worn in the past seven days. I'm happy with the outcome of the book, however have gone onto develop my ideas for my book so that the focus is more on the illustrations; therefore, I am still going to include collage in my work but I don't want it to be so much of a focus point.

I really like fashion illustration, so want to continue on with this theme for my artists book; instead of using the clothes that I had worn in a week, I have now decided to focus on the floral trend. I have now started to experiment with drawing techniques and different media, and have started exploring different materials or images that can be used within the illustrations and collage.

As of yet, I have not found any other book artists who focus on fashion illustration as a theme; if anyone knows of any, could you please let me know as it would be helpful for my research. I have found some artists who use the same media or techniques/processes as me, and who produce work that I am really inspired by. One of these artists is Sharon McCartney, who produces artists book out of existing vintage books.

Her work is all created using mixed media, and collage of paper and images to create each page of her book. I would love to create a book that is inspired by McCartney's book as I think each and every page would be exciting and interesting in their own way.

Screen Printed Christmas Card Design

I know its not a book, but Im thinking I may use this character in a little series (booky)
Im going to hand screen print a load of these at A6 to make xmas cards.
Because its going to be printed very small I didnt want to over complicate it as that would be tricky to print neatly. I need them to be neat and tidy so people will buy them. I decided not to use an overlap as the brown and blue make a mucky green puddle colour and I wanted to try a more regimented design. I will be doing overlap in my next poster though.

The Artists' Books collection contains books (normally defined as a number of pages attached to each other in some way) that are wholly or primarily conceived by (though not necessarily actually produced by) an artist and that are made in multiple editions. The collection numbers about 4,000, includes books dating from the 1960s onwards and is international in scope with an emphasis on British artists.

2nd summer screen print project.
Folds up into a square book and opens out into an A4 poster.
To sell them I packaged them in plastic bags and put a business car, badge and some seeds in side.
I stuck a sticker on the outside of the bag with directions on how to plant the seeds.
I think these will sell better at artist book fairs but I did sell 3 at 'Artsfest' £6 each, which I thought was a good price.
I also made 3 different badge designs and hand pressed them together in uni, I chose a few different colour combinations for each design, I believe the badges were a great success, I made 60 and sold 40 at 50p each.

They sort of go with the artist book I've made too, could be sold as a set, one supports the other.

Liverpool Artists Book Fair June '09

Last weekend was the Liverpool Artists Book Fair at A Foundation. We had a stall there and looked so good! having more new books to sell really made our table look brillant. There were about 9 students who had stock on the table, selling books badges and prints, and we had a good sell (particularly Jat!!)!

I was there manning the stall on the Sunday, and Jat the saturday. In comparison to Leeds and Bristol it wasn't very busy, but despite that it was quite successful. There was always a steady stream of people showing interest and buying. Unfortunately this also meant that being the only one to watch the table, i only had a brief chance to have look round. (though that was probably best for my pennies.. we all know i'm a sucker for little cute things, and as usual there was plenty around). But as i said, i did have a chance to have a little look, and i met a few new people there too, as well as catching up with some of the usual crowd. There was some absolutely stunning work there!! It was really inspiring!

The Sheffield Artist’s Book Prize and Exhibition is open to makers of artists’ books in any format
and from anywhere in the world. Entry to the exhibition and prize is free.
Following the success of last year’s prize and exhibition, we are pleased to announce a number of
initiatives to extend the scope of the prize this year. In addition to the main Sheffield Artist’s Book
Prize, we will also award a Student Prize and a special Jury Prize.
All books entered for the Student Prize will be automatically entered into the Jury Prize and the
main Sheffield Artist’s Book Prize. Prizes awarded will be a combination of cash and exhibition of-
fers.
The format for selecting the winner of the SABP will be the same as last year. Visitors to the exhi-
bition will be given a voting slip and asked to choose their favourite book(s). The new Student and
Jury Prizes will be selected by a jury.
The exact format of the Exhibition will depend upon the volume of submissions, although it is an-
ticipated that all entries will be displayed in some form during the Festival.
The exhibition will run for 4 weeks during October 2009 (exact dates to be announced).
Closing date for submissions – 31st August 2009.

Trying to get together some imagery for badges!

The first set just shows the entire images from 'statues of europe', which i think are a bit small and not so interesting. The second set, shows how ive cropped in on certain areas of each image which is a bit more interesting!

They would be cropped in a bit more because the circle shown is the outside circle, not the inner one.

what do people think?

Finshed! But i have a question...because there are 2 colours, does that make it 2 editions? or is it 1 edition?!

Really happy with how these have come out, some are better than others because of the nature of printing onto both sides of a piece of paper!

Using a folding technique called a 'square flexagon' I'm making a mini book, silk screen - 2 colours. The images have to be cut in half and then joined up again in order for the fold to work - fingers crossed it does work!

This book has been going on for ages and after thinking it wasn't going to work, the first attempt sold really well in Bristol so this is the new improved 'row of houses' accordion book...3 colour silk screen on somerset paper.

Bristol Artists Book Event report

A well organized event in four spacious gallery spaces. Met some interesting people, as well as bumping into a few familiar faces, below are some pictures from the event:

Jatinder, Charlotte and Amiee were absolute stars, representing themselves as well as BIAD with impeccable charm and candour. I was particularly impressed with their enthusiasm to explain not only their own work but that of others too!

Artists' Book Fair Liverpool

The second Liverpool Artists' Book Fair will take place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June 2009 at A Foundation. We are looking for artists who would like to show their books, multiples and paper-based or printed works. If you would like to apply for a table at the artists' book fair please email up to 5 images (each image under 1mb please) and a short statement about the book works you make to info@afoundation.org.uk. Alternatively, we are happy to look at personal websites/pages.

Suggestions for book-related performances, readings, interventions, discussion and other events are also welcome; please get in touch with your ideas or questions.

Tables will cost £25 for one day or £40 for the whole weekend. Priority will be given to artists booking both days.

Deadline for table applications is Monday 25th May 2009.

Will anyone be here, and is anyone interested in attending?
