single page binding

I clamped my pages between two pieces of wood and a clamp, then used a file to create slits down the spine area of my book. after filled it with glue and placed two pieces of (book binding) thread inthe slits, after pasted it with PVA glue again. left it int he clamps to dry to then reveal the book had been bound. After i just trimmed down the excess thread, and glued some scrim over the spine to secure it.

Overlapping with Children's books

I found these in a book about children's picture books but I think that they can also apply to artist books as there seems to be quite an art to them!
This first one is like a little stage that you set up in layers and then the viewer has a little hole to look through at the scene...
This second one is a block book where you can change the order the images are opened at (I think!?)...
This third one I like, you swivel the circle around and it reveals another image underneath.  It could be something that you build up further and have a whole book of images underneath one another.

Altenative Press Fair 1st February

Hi people! We plan to attend this event! I have paid for a table, and would like ink-soup issues 1&2, make-us-money, and the ABC zine and cheap book section to be represented. I need help however, with someone manning and selling our work (an enthusiastic, organized, and friendly soul, who is willing to sell their own as well as other people's work - you will be briefed and your train fare will be paid for)

If there are no takers then we will have to pull out of this event, as I am hoping to attend Angouleme at the same time! And will report back to you on this event!!!

Note! The Alternative Press Fair is more an opportunity for the lower priced end of books to be marketed, while The "Artist's books" will be represented at Leeds & Bristol, which Mario, has kindly offered to pay for!

12TH INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS BOOK FAIR

12th International Contemporary Artists' Book Fair

taking place in Leeds, UK, 6 & 7 March 2009.

This fair is probably more fine art orientated - but again I personally will be selling at either the pound, or the 5 pound mark. You should all take the opportunity to re-package your work, and make another set of limited editions! I myself will be re-designing many of my original works, but also looking forward to exploring new designs!

Manchester! Our first Outing

Yes! That's how much we made, one hundred and eighty one pounds and fifty pence. The Bad news is there where quite a few non-sellers, reasons of which will vary between books - We will have an analytical session for all those interested!

A few mentions, Jatinder sold one at twenty pounds, and was the star of the show - A lady from the Tate gallery collection almost bought one, and even returned to apologize for not purchasing the book - there were several professional reasons why the book may have been turned down - again to discuss!

Roo sold 66 pounds worth, and was the overall best seller - 10 books and 8 postcard sets, and quite a few book of secrets (but I keep the money of those for my train fare) - Roo email me to let me know how you want the money transferred

In a frantic last minute spree near the end of the day, a woman finally bought one of Johan's!

Here are some pictures of our table, I will post more of the event later:

Thanks to Jess for coming up, and making the time fly by with that northern banter! You did well to put up with me for the whole day!

A little bit off the path of Artists Books, but still a good couple of days out, Flip Animation Festival 08 is being held 6-8th November, the launch is in Birmingham and most of the rest is being held in Wolverhampton. Apparently it's also preceded by some gaming events in the days before.

Inspiration for Artist Book people

I came across a really useful search engine for Artist Books. You can search by artist, book type (e.g. accordion), technique, binding, subject or publisher.
Just a note to say, you need to enable pop-ups to use this site, as soon as you select something from the drop-down menus a new window will pop-up with the results.

Have fun!

artists greetings cards

Heres a place where you can sell handmade greetings cards. you just send em a load of cards and they sell them for you in a gallery. They just double the price you want for them. so say £1.50, they would sell them for £3. Sounds pretty simple.

The Independent Line

'The Cheltenham Awards present a one-day symposium exploring autonomies and alternatives for the new generation of narrative illustrators' Wednesday 15th October. Also a chance to see the winning entries for the 'Tall Tales' Cheltenham Illustration Award. Tickets are free but need to be booked by the end of September apparently.

my easy way of making a case-bound book

When you have all your pages glued (or bound) together, you'll need to measure the height, the width and the thickness of the bound pages. Combine those numbers and numbers shown in the picture, you can make a fairly nice case-bound book. This can be applied to books of any size. and it's really quite easy. Give it a try!

we love your books

Life is full of happy coincidences, and one of the best ones I've had this month is finding out that a partner in crime during my MA study at BIAD (actually we were a big gang that ran the MA with ruthless efficiency) is now a well established book artist!

for those interested there is a great opportunity to have work exhibited in a weloveyourbooks exhibition next year. For details:
